Insurance information for car owners seeking breakdown insurance cover from Direct Line

Direct Line breakdown insurance is wholly owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland. The company first came to public notice as a UK car insurance company when it became the first main stream direct insurer to sell its policies over the telephone in April 1985. It has successfully expanded into car breakdown insurance services as well as home, pet, travel, critical illness and life insurances. Also car sales (through JamjarCars’site), loans, mortgages and savings. It is part of the third largest insurance group in the UK and is the most recognised brand in the UK for domestic insurance.

The company offer a variety of car breakdown insurance policies to suit the needs of the motorist. These are;

Rescue – This level of car breakdown insurance cover provides roadside assistance providing your car is at least one mile from your home, as well as up to one hour’s free labour. If the breakdown can’t be fixed at the roadside, your car will be transported to a suitable nearby garage. Accident help and advice is also available should you suffer a road accident. There are no call-out charges.

Rescue Plus – This level of car breakdown insurance includes all the benefits of Direct Line Rescue and extends them to cover a car breakdown at, or close to your home. It provides peace of mind for those occasions when the car won’t start following overnight parking.

Recovery – You get all the breakdown insurance cover benefits of Rescue with the addition of transport of your car and up to seven passengers in a single journey to your home address, your original destination or a local garage, if the company can't repair your vehicle by the end of the working day.

Recovery Plus – Recovery breakdown insurance benefits are extended so that if it becomes apparent that your car will not be repaired by the end of the working day, or it has been stolen and not recovered in a roadworthy condition the same day and you have not chosen an option under standard breakdown recovery, you have one of three choices. First, where available, Direct Line will provide a hire car no larger than 1600cc, to continue your journey or return to the policyholder’s home, up to a maximum cost of £100.00. Second, they will pay up to £100.00 for you and any passengers to continue to their journey or return to the policyholder’s address by alternative transport. Or third, overnight bed and breakfast accommodation (excluding alcohol) for you and any passenger in a local hotel whilst awaiting breakdown repairs. This is available only if the breakdown occurs more than 25 miles from the policyholder's home address or intended destination, and up to a maximum of £40 per person or £240 per incident. In addition to these three car breakdown insurance options, if needed, the company will pay for a single rail ticket for the agreed driver to collect the vehicle and a messaging service to inform relatives or friends you are on your way.

EuroPlus – Offers you car breakdown protection while you are driving on the continent where the vehicle to be covered is less than 16 years of age. EuroPlus gives you access to the largest car breakdown network in Europe which is currently providing breakdown insurance cover for over 12 million motorists. For example, the company will provide help at the roadside, the cost of travel home if your car is stolen and they will get your car back to you if you have a breakdown and the car cannot be driven. They also provide free legal cover and pay for the delivery of replacement parts if they're not available locally.
