Insurance quotes being denied to the over 80's

Posted 4th February 2010

If you're 80 years old or above and resident in the UK, car insurance may not be easy to find since research has revealed that around half of motor insurers automatically exclude anyone over the age of 80. Searching for a car insurance quote could therefore be futile for many older drivers, despite their health status or lifestyle, and even if they have an exemplary motoring history the chances of being offered a quote are virtually zero once they hit 80.

This blatantly ageist policy is common amongst a growing number of UK car insurance companies, placing unfair and unhelpful restrictions on the lifestyles of the elderly population, preventing many from enjoying the freedom and independence that driving brings. Placing upper age restrictions on car insurance products is being condemned by UK age-related charities who view the practice as a kind of discrimination that ultimately reduces older drivers to second class consumers, forcing them to either pay vastly inflated premiums or give up driving their own car altogether.

While the over 80's are almost guaranteed to have trouble finding a UK car insurance company that will provide any kind of policy at all, it is becoming increasingly apparent that difficulties are being experienced by those searching for affordable cover at the relatively young age of 65. This worrying trend has prompted calls for a change in attitude amongst UK's insurers in light of the fact that people are healthier and living longer, and those who are still able to lead an active life for years beyond retirement age should not be penalised by car insurance companies who regard them as nothing more than a high risk.
