Car Insurance Policy Theft Exclusions

The first frosts of this year mean winter is upon us, however, according to the AA Insurance, beware of car thieves! Why? Many modern cars nowadays are impossible to steal because they are either keyless or have sophisticated anti theft technology. This means that thieves need to act smart, and in recent years opportunities to steal on frosty mornings are a thief’s paradise.

Car thefts occur on a frosty morning because some motorists start their car engines to start defrosting the car and then go back in to the house for a few minutes. The bad news is two fold, especially if you fall victim to this type of car crime because not only is your pride and joy stolen but most car insurance policies are unlikely to cover you for this loss. Leaving keys in an unattended vehicle is a specific exclusion from most motor insurance policies.

It's not just frosty mornings that motorists should think about their actions, other targets include pay and display car parks, petrol stations, and brief stops to the shops where keys are often left in the ignition unattended. In these types of incidents, motorists leave themselves open to both the opportunist and organised car criminal, therefore, car owners beware!
