AA British Insurance Premium Index

According to the index, which monitors both car and household premiums, the average quoted comprehensive car insurance policy fell by 3.2%. This type of UK car insurance is the most widely purchased and covers damage to policyholders’ vehicles in addition to third party cover. However, the Shoparound premium index, which seeks to score the cheapest quotes, shows a slight increase of 1%.

Third party fire and theft cover appeared to fall by 4.5%, however, the average premium is still £1,196.24. Compare this figure to the previous year (April 2009) and the rise is a whopping 19%. Similarly comprehensive car insurance costs 13.4% more than the previous year.

Although the news in the first quarter is welcome, the view from the AA is for further increases in premiums to combat the growing cost of claims. Personal injury and fraud claims continue to rise quickly and are a concern for the industry. In addition, we are still in the midst of a deep recession. It will be interesting to see the next quarterly figures to judge whether this prediction is correct.
