Winter Weather Car Thefts
Posted 9th January 2010
According to the Association of British Insurers motorists (ABI) are risking invalidating their UK car insurance polices by leaving their engines running to defrost their cars whilst unattended leaving the vehicle vulnerable to theft. Insurers are free to repudiate claims on the basis that you are not taking reasonable care by leaving the keys in the ignition. The warning comes as Britain faces up to it worst winter for 30 years with temperatures even in the South of England reaching –18, meaning there is great temptation for this type of motorist action.
In certain parts of the country such as Greater Manchester, the problem of unattended vehicles being stolen on motorists drives has been become particularly acute. According to the ABI, Lancashire Police revealed this week that in just one morning four vehicles were stolen in this fashion. This problem is not new, last year, a criminal gang labelled the “Ice Bandits” received custodial sentences for stealing unattended cars.
The ABI are reiterating previous Government warnings that it only takes a minute for a car to be stolen, therefore, avoid being caught it is the strong message!
