Government plans to get tough on uninsured drivers
In a move designed to address many serious issues concerned with the large number of uninsured drivers using Britain's roads, the Government appear to be considering the introduction of a new law which will make it an offence to allow any vehicle that does not have adequate insurance to be kept on public roads.
While such a Government policy could give the police powers to correlate data from DVLA and car insurance company databases, it would therefore be possible for them to identify the owner of every vehicle being driven or simply parked on a public road in Britain and whether or not these vehicles have motor insurance cover.
The initial course of action under this Government policy is intended to merely warn car owners who have been identified and subsequently found not to have insurance for a particular vehicle, thereby giving them the opportunity to purchase appropriate cover immediately. If such warnings are ignored then offending motorists could face a possible £100 fine and the prospect of having their car seized and crushed.
The Department of Transport predict an eventual reduction in the cost of car insurance premiums if these proposed measures produce the desired result of fewer uninsured motorist claims being submitted, which will be good news for every law-abiding road-user, even though criticism from some experts and sceptics still casts doubt on the fact that all offenders will be caught in this way.
