Rising numbers of Uninsured UK drivers

According to research conducted on behalf of Moneysupermarket.com, the estimated number of uninsured drivers on the UK’s road has risen by a whopping 33% compared to 2008. This potentially amounts to nearly every fifth car on the roads having no car insurance.

Demographically, men are more likely to commit this type of road offence compared to women, and while 37% of young drivers questioned in the research admit to driving without cover, just 7% of those aged sixty and above were prepared to risk driving while uninsured.

If this research is truly representative of car owners in the UK, this will come as a blow for the Government and the insurance industry. Despite on the spot fines, six points added to a driving licence and the possibility of vehicles being impounded or crushed if caught, the message does not appear to be getting through. The insurance industry estimates the cost of uninsured drivers to be around half a billion pounds which, in real terms, equates to each law abiding policyholder paying an additional £30 to cover the shortfall.

One of the reasons given for this huge rise in motorists failing to provide themselves with car insurance is the recession, but while it may be saving money it is a practice that is both grossly unfair to those who abide by the law and potentially dangerous to other road users. It is therefore abundantly clear that a lot more needs to be done by the Government in terms of deterrents to discourage uninsured driving.
