ABI Warns Motorists in Cold Weather
Posted 11th December 2010
With temperatures predicted to fall to -20 this week, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is warning motorists to be aware of the ice bandits! This is not the first time such warnings have been given.
Last year, Lancashire Police recorded 27 vehicles unattended with 4 cars stolen in one morning in Greater Manchester. It seems some motorists completely forget about the possibility of theft and simply start up their cars on a cold morning to warm them up. With cars left unattended for short time, the invitation is there for the opportunist car thief to simply drive off. Although the Police had success last year in convicting a gang known as the ice cold bandits who deliberately targeted motorists, not all thieves were caught.
The risks of such behaviour by motorists is two fold, firstly, you may never see your beloved car again if its stolen, secondly, some insurers may repudiate your claim on the basis that you were not taking reasonable care by the mere fact that the keys were left in the ignition whilst the car was left unattended.
The ABI’s advice is to simply stay with the vehicle whilst you are warming it up, therefore, deterring any opportunist thieves and keeping your car insurance valid.
