Misfuelling Insurance Claims

Posted 17th September 2010

With one in three motorists potentially not covered by their insurance, misfuelling is becoming the scourge of the modern motorist. Therefore, in recognition of this widening problem, the RAC has launched a fuel patrol service designed to assist motorists at the roadside with the aim of damage limitation and helping them on their way. Patrol vans will be fitted with specialist equipment designed to extract the fuel from the vehicles tank and then flush the fuel system. The RAC estimate that the driver will be able to continue their journey within 40 minutes of the RAC attending the incident. Initially, the RAC will fit patrols with this equipment in designated hot spots. Eventually, coverage will be increased to cover other areas.

The cost of repairs when misfuelling occurs can range from £300 to £6,000. In response to the growing problem, some insurers and brokers are offering specific misfuelling insurance policies whilst others exclude this event within the terms and conditions of the policy. Whilst comprehensive car insurance will normally treat a claim as accidental damage, some third party fire and theft policies contain exclusions.

Other measures, motorists can take to eliminate the risk of misfuelling consist of using devices such as Fuelsure which physically prevents the insertion of the smaller diameter petrol pump nozzle for diesel cars..
