A growing need for improved car key security
Statistics have shown that there has been a marked increase in the number of cars being stolen in the UK following the initial theft of keys during personal robbery or domestic burglary. AA car insurance have highlighted this growing trend by launching an appeal to keep keys safe at all times, warning car owners that they could be at risk of having their vehicles stolen to order - upmarket, performance or classic cars being regularly targeted by thieves using more sophisticated and violent methods, although any type of car is potentially at risk.
An independent crime survey suggests that cars over 10 years old are easier to steal as most modern makes of vehicle can not be driven away without a key, leading to this upsurge in thefts aimed specifically at obtaining car keys in preference to any other personal possession. The improved security features of modern cars can therefore prove to be a double-edged sword for vehicle owners, especially those that have already suffered at the hands of thieves who have entered their home or caused personal injury in order to drive away their car.
Insurance companies are now offering specific advice aimed at the importance of keeping car keys safe in all situations and at all times, particularly as mugging, pickpocketing, carjacking or blatant confrontation are common ways for thieves to obtain car keys. And while there are many reported incidents of house break-ins where the car has disappeared from the drive or street outside along with other things taken from inside the dwelling, it's always wise to check what your car insurance company advises when it comes to car - and key - security measures to suit your individual requirements.
