Possible Lower Premiums for Young Drivers!

This will be music to many students and younger drivers’ ears. However, before celebrations ring out it is worth noting that because one out of five young motorists are involved in a crash in the first year of driving, and, are 10 times more likely to suffer a serious collision, Insurers are not about to lower premiums for the masses!

According to the AA, car insurance companies on the other hand should reward young drivers who attend applicable advanced driver training with lower insurance premiums and be seen to do so in a public manner. This approach will not only benefit those young drivers in the pocket but will also save lives and injuries on Britain’s roads.

The AA cite the Drive Smart Scheme launched recently in North Wales as an example of an initiative where the AA have teamed up with the Police to address teenage road deaths. The purpose of the scheme is to identify at risk drivers and offer free driver safety training. Although the scheme is primarily aimed at this group of motorists, other drivers can apply to attend.

To help further the cause, the AA Charitable trust have committed to funding 2,000 free courses. It is worth stating that the scheme is not mandatory, therefore, it remains to be seen how effective it will be in reducing accidents caused by young drivers. What is clear, however, is that the AA is seeking recognition of the scheme from the wider insurance industry. In practice terms, this means insurance companies offering extra discounts to young drivers who have attended such courses.
