2008 Car Insurance News Summary

As we near the end of 2008, there has been a lot to talk about in the car insurance industry.

In February this year, it was reported that over the previous winter, there were 6 million motorists involved in a accident. This is almost 20% of the UK driving public. A survey amongst drivers who had made a claim confirmed that many less well used roads were being salted by local councils.

Another piece of news to break in February was a questionnaire carried out by Diamond Insurance which seemed to indicate that women were becoming more stressed during driving, and when road incidents occur more likely to react. More worryingly, 35% of women said that driving was more stressful than a year ago.

In July, Admiral Insurance conducted a survey amongst those that passed their driving test and found that if you are younger, you are less likely to make a claim on your insurance than your older counterparts, however, you are more likely to be convicted of a motoring offence such as speeding.

Car Insurance Fraud hit the headlines in 2008, with the Association of British Insurers claiming higher detection rates in July. In addition, there was also the high profile court case in Bradford in late November, early December where several were convicted of serious insurance fraud.

The high costs of petrol and diesel over the summer and winter months cost the motorist dear in 2008. Car insurance premiums also rose with the average premium rising above £700 according to the AA car insurance price index.

Many had thought we had the last of Pay as You Drive Insurance following the withdrawal of the Norwich Union scheme, however, Cobra Wuneilli announced a new product sold through insurance partners which would the “smart solution”.

Lastly, the Expertcardirectory is pleased to announce a “Car Insurance Comparison” service offered through Insurancewide. The service allows consumers to compare leading insurance companies. Get a quote now!
