Longer Learning for Young Drivers

Posted 24th October 2010

Pressure is mounting on the Government following the Association of British Insurers (ABI) call for a minimum of one years learning for student and young drivers.

Why is the ABI calling for this measure?

According to research commission by this industry association, three out of four people surveyed out of 2,500 believe this measure would reduce the number of injuries and fatalities involving young drivers. Two thirds questioned confirmed that they would like to see restrictions on carrying passengers for newly qualified drivers whilst 68% confirmed they would like to see a more structured education programme warning this age group about the dangers of driving.

Sadly, the facts give credence to the views of those questions in the survey as too many young drivers as a proportion of all motorists are involved in serious road traffic accidents. Every day, ten young drivers or their passengers are either killed or seriously injured on roads. In fact, for young men aged between 15 and 19, accidental road deaths represent the biggest killer for this male age group.

If measures were introduced by the Government that effectively increased the level of young people’s knowledge and experience before allowing them behind the wheel, it’s possible that the young driver’s car insurance premiums may reduce in response. Over the last few years, this age group’s insurance premiums have risen faster than at any time in the last twenty years.
