Misfueling Not Covered By Insurance

Posted 26th May 2010

According to the British Insurers Brokers Association (BIBA) one in three UK car insurance policyholders are not covered if they accidently fill their vehicle with the wrong fuel. Unbeknown to some motorists some third party fire and theft policies contain a misfuelling exclusion. Most comprehensive policies cover this act albeit as an accidental damage claim.

According to BIBA, diesel car drivers are the most likely to make the mistake of misfueling with 95% of the 150,000 cases recorded simply putting petrol into their diesel car. Amongst this high number has been some high profile celebrities caught out including Philip Schofield and England Footballer Wayne Rooney. The causes of this are attributable to the hectic lives we are lead with most incidents occurring on Monday mornings and Friday evenings. The cost of repairs can vary from £300 to drain the tank to approximately £5,000 if the car is driven for any length of time.

If an unfortunate misfueling happens, BIBA advise that the vehicle should not be started and that the breakdown company and petrol station be notified immediately. Knowingly driving away with the wrong fuel may not be accepted by the insurance company claims department because the policyholder is deemed to have failed in their duty of care.
