Government proposes to get tough with Uninsured Drivers
As In an attempt by the Government to get to grips with the plague of uninsured drivers, the latest proposal by the Department of Transport is that offenders will receive a fixed penalty notice and fine which is yet to be determined. If these sanctions are ignored by offenders, court prosecution, seizure and disposal of vehicles may ensue. The Government consultation runs until 16th April.
It is already the case that through technology and better cooperation the Police can cross check Insurance and DVLA databases to see who is not insured, therefore, it is hoped this type of offence can be significantly reduced.
Why is this such a problem? The Association of British Insurers estimate that nearly 2 million motorists drive without valid insurance or put it another way 6.5% of the driving population. The cost to the Insurance industry is huge which effectively is paid for by law abiding policyholders who do pay extra premiums as a result.
It remains to be seen whether the Government will actually implement these proposals, however, organisations such as the AA support this consultation process.
