Most motorists Admit to speeding on motorways
Whilst most drivers probably already know that the national speed limit of 70 mph is rarely adhered to on Britain’s Motorways, a recent survey by Swift car insurance company confirms this to be true.
In the survey of 500 motorists, four out of five drivers admitted to exceeding the speed limit on motorways whilst 71% admitted to speeding on both A and B roads. More worryingly, 61% of those asked admitted to exceeding the speed limit in built up areas such as towns.
Another finding revealed that the introduction of fixed speed cameras and technology which warns drivers of up and coming speeding cameras only served to encourage erratic driving to the point that some drivers broke suddenly before a speed camera only to speed up once they had passed the speed camera.
Although not the first survey to identify this issue, the illegal use of mobile phones still continues, with over two thirds admitting to using a hand held mobile phone whilst driving.
Further traffic violations such as overtaking on the inside lane were also admitted by many drivers in this survey. In terms of the impact on car insurance, over 65% did not realise that some traffic offences can actually invalidate the policy.
