Uninsured Driver Research
Some recent research conducted by the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) reveals some interesting findings regarding current uninsured driving behaviour during the recession. It is well known that the demographic group most likely to drive without insurance is the 18 to 24 young drivers age group. There is a whole host of reasons why some youngsters choose to break the law, principally the cost of young drivers car insurance being extremely high. For many this is could be in excess of £1000. This is mainly because this group of motorists are less experienced and therefore statistically more likely to be involved in a car accident, but in addition to this, young drivers have not had the chance to build up no claims discounts.
The MIB research looked at attitudes to uninsured driving amongst the 18 to 24 age group and discovered that just over one in ten believe they are unlikely to get caught, whilst 9% believe letting the car insurance policy lapse for a few weeks is acceptable. More worryingly, nearly 30% claim to know a peer who has driven without car insurance. Lastly, 6% of respondents to the survey claim to have driven without insurance at some stage during their driving history. The net is closing, however, because the merging of the DVLA and motor insurance databases operating in conjunction with Automatic Number Plate Recognition fitted to police vehicles means it is now more easier than ever for uninsured drivers on the road to be detected.
