Classic Car Insurance Guide

Classic cars are usually considered to be the type of transport used by eccentrics and TV detectives. Some are glamorous, expensive, and high maintenance status symbols. However, the majority of them simply do not fit this stereotype. Who is to say that a cherished Austin A40 in a supermarket car park is less of a Classic Car than a Mark II Jaguar at Ascot?

There are three terms used to describe vehicles of the bygone era, and a classic car insurance policy can be used across all three categories.

Veteran Cars: Manufactured before 1903.
Vintage Cars: Manufactured between 1903 and 1933.
Classics Cars: Tend to be at least fifteen years old.

If you are thinking of purchasing a car and are unsure if it is a classic or not, then you should check with your insurance company, particularly because the definition of the term can vary depending on the insurer. Usually, larger insurers do not provide classic car insurance schemes, but will provide the same level of cover as those who drive a typical car seen on the street every day.

Top tips for classic car insurance
1. It is widely reported in the motoring press that classic insurance cover is far cheaper than a modern car policy but it is important to be vigilant and well informed.
2. The condition and scarcity of a classic car can vary dramatically. An owner’s perception of the value of their beloved motor can very easily be at odds with the car insurance company valuation!
3. It is vital that you take out a guaranteed agreed valuation when insuring your classic car.
4. Search for a specialist insurer. They are more likely to provide specialist classic car insurance cover, and ultimately provide a better rate.

NB: A genuine agreed valuation is the value guaranteed by the insurance company should the classic car be written off or stolen. Make sure you check that your valuation is ‘guaranteed’, as some insurance companies have refused to pay out the full amount, despite the classic car owner believing that they were fully covered.

Insurance companies usually add a small charge for an agreed valuation, but it can be a false economy to omit it from your policy. If the pay out on your claim is significantly less than your perceived value, it is never easy to hear.

Please note, always check with your Insurer regarding classic car insurance policy conditions and levels of cover purchased.
