Driving Abroad Car Insurance Guide

If you live or travel abroad it can be virtually impossible to arrange international car insurance. Nearly all the UK’s companies provide limited cover for people who wish to drive abroad with their car but insurance cover is limited to 30 days. In addition, if they do provide cover they will assume you are using the car for personal use, such as a holiday.

If you live, or have been placed in a foreign country for an indefinite period, it is important to protect your vehicle. International car insurance is specially designed to meet the needs of people driving abroad, these include:

• Diplomats.
• Expatriates.
• Humanitarian Organisations.
• International Businesses.
• International Charities.
• International Schools.
• Religious Orders.
• United Nations Agencies.

Buying International Car Insurance
If you need an international policy, it is important that you first check the local laws of the country in which you are resident. Some countries will require you to be insured by local companies because a loss or damage car insurance policy may not include third party liability. This is because it needs to be arranged locally to comply with the laws and regulations of the country where the car is being used.

For advice on travelling to each country, ensure that you comply with any special local legal requirements by visiting the Foreign Office for advice before you travel.

International Car Insurance should include cover for:
• Accidental damage, fire and theft risks.
• Protection against windscreen breakage and for fitted accessories such as audio equipment.
• Additional protection against riot, civil commotion, hijacking and armed robbery.
• Inclusion of insurance cover for hurricanes, earthquakes and flooding.
• Payment of the purchase price for a seriously damaged or stolen car that is less than 12 months old (on non-commercial policies only).
• Immediate international car insurance cover anywhere in the world (except the USA and Canada).
• Multiple vehicle and fleet discounts.
