This group was created following the merger of CGU and Norwich Union in May 2000 and is now the world's fifth largest insurance group. They were called CGNU until rebranding as Aviva in July 2002. The group's holding company brings together 50 trading names and is perhaps best known for its Norwich Union UK insurance company brand which produces 61% of the group's general insurance business. Other trading names that exist under the group umbrella include Hibernian (Ireland), Delta Lloyd (the Netherlands), Commercial Union (Poland), Eurofil (France), Navigator (Australia), Pilot (Canada) Morley Fund Management (UK) and Hill House Hammond Insurance Brokers (a subsidiary of Norwich Union UK).
The group's main activities are long-term savings, fund management and general insurance. It has premium income and investment sales from continuing operations of £30 billion, and more than £240 billion of assets under management. The group has 51,000 employees and 30 million customers worldwide.
The Norwich Union brand was re-launched in October 2000 following the merger of CGU and Norwich Union in May 2000, and encompasses Norwich Union Life - one of the UK's leading life insurers, Norwich Union Insurance - the UK's biggest general insurer and Norwich Union Central Services - the internal service provider to Aviva's UK businesses and some European operations.
Norwich Union Insurance sells 70 products covering car insurance, homeowners,
creditors, commercial vehicles, commercial property and liability, and
distributes across the broker, corporate partnership and retail direct
insurance distribution channels in the UK. The e-commerce operation claims
to generate 100,000 quotes a month.
Norwich Union insures one in five households, one in seven motor
vehicles and more than 800,000 businesses. It has 4.3 million customers
and
employs about 13,300 staff in over 40 locations across the UK.
