In the UK, arm of the group occupies leading market positions in general insurance, life, and health through PPP Healthcare and AXA Sun Life operations.
This insurance group is the third largest general insurer in the UK. Launched in January 1998 as AXA Provincial Insurance plc, following the merger of the UAP and AXA Group in 1997, the company changed its name to AXA Insurance plc in October 1998. The company then acquired Guardian Royal Exchange Group in May 1999. In 2001, AXA Insurance generated revenue of £1,619 million and comprised a total workforce of 4,629. The main products sold include car insurance, home, and commercial products through several methods of distribution to individuals, corporate customers and a number of major partners, including Thomas Cook, RAC, AA and Centrica.
AXA Sun Life was formed in 1997, following the merger of the Sun Life Group and AXA Equity & Law. In 2001, AXA Sun Life generated revenue of £5,934 million and comprised a total workforce of 3,665. AXA Sun Life market areas include group and personal pensions as well as life assurance, investment bonds, mutual funds, stakeholder pensions and long-term care products.
AXA PPP Healthcare dates from 1940 when it was known as the London Association for Hospital Services. In its infancy, the company was actively supported by the royal medical colleges, the King's Fund and the British Medical Association. In 2001, AXA PPP Healthcare generated revenue of £450 million, and comprised a total workforce of 2,163. Today it forms the healthcare arm of AXA in the UK and serves over two million customers. It comprises the following complementary businesses; AXA PPP Healthcare Limited, Denplan and AXA Assistance UK Ltd. The products sold through these companies include medical insurance, dental care finance, counseling services and occupational health/ health information.
