This group is listed on the London Stock Exchange and has net tangible assets of approximately £100 million. The Chaucer Group came into existence in its current form through the merger in July 1998 of the Chaucer managing agency and Aberdeen Lloyds Insurance Trust plc. The latter company was one of the first generation of Lloyds corporate capital companies.

The core of the group's business is Composite Syndicate 1084 which has been created through the merger of aviation, marine, non marine and motor insurance businesses in 2003. It has a capacity of £400 million for 2004, in which the group has an underwriting interest in excess of £315 million. Chaucer also manages and provides capital to Nuclear Syndicate 1176, which has been the most profitable syndicate at Lloyds over recent years. It will have a capacity of £15 million in 2004, of which Chaucer’s underwriting interest will be £6.3 million.

Chaucer Insurance is the UK Motor Division of the Chaucer Group and a division of Chaucer Syndicate 1084. The group's insurance arm began trading as Ibex Motor Policies in 1965. In September 2000 the operation was re-branded as Chaucer Insurance and located to Whitstable in Kent.

The group's insurance portfolio consists of UK private car insurance, and both standard and non-standard fleet cover. These car insurance products are distributed from a network of approximately 3000 non-Lloyd's brokers and intermediaries. Car fleet insurance represents approximately 37% of the overall account. Additional insurance classes include motorcycle and small vans insurance as well as specialised schemes.
