Fortis Insurance UK was formed in April 2000 following the merger of Bishopsgate and Northern Star Insurance Company Limited. Their success in the intermediary car insurance market is a result of their participation in the development of full cycle Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) trading systems. FThe group's stated aims are to develop full cycle household insurance policies in addition to offering commercial and private caravan insurance.

The group's Motor Guard insurance product helped win the Insurance Times 2002 Motor Insurer of the year. One feature of this award winning car insurance product is Fortis’s Onecall Claims service. The Onecall claims service includes a courtesy car if the vehicle is un-driveable, on the next working day so long as the car can be repaired by one of the group's approved car repairers. If the vehicle is still mobile, the courtesy vehicle will be delivered when the owner’s vehicle is collected for repair. After repair, the car is cleaned, inside and out, and returned to the owner. Repairs are guaranteed for 3 years. If the car cannot be repaired, the group will offer a settlement amount within 2 weeks or within 1 week of the engineer's report, whichever is soonest. Once agreed, Fortis will send the cheque on the following working day.
