Insurance Groups Guide

The UK car insurance industry is extremely complex and the company that you buy a policy from may be no more than a brand. Alternatively, they may be the underwriting agency that provides you with your policy. For example, did you know that two of the most famous consumer insurance brands Direct Line and Churchill are now owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland Group? Similarly both the Esure and Halifax insurance brands are now owned by HBOS (Halifax Bank of Scotland).

Lloyds of London insurance market also have a key role to play and quite often a policy is placed through Lloyds syndicates or underwriting agencies. Equity Red Star, for example, is one of the top ten car insurers in the UK and is a Lloyds syndicate which focuses on underwriting car and personal lines policies through the insurance broker market.

It is also the case that some insurance groups offer car cover across different distribution networks. Royal & SunAlliance have recently launched their direct brand 'more than' in addition to offering car insurance to brokers through their broker division. The company also underwrites policies on behalf of other companies, most notably home insurance for Halifax.

Business globalisation is no stranger to the UK industry and there are several players who are foreign owned, including American International Group Inc (AIG), Groupama (a wholly owned subsidiary of one of Europe's most powerful financial groups) and AXA, who are one of the world's leading asset management companies. Not forgetting Allianz Cornhill and Zurich who are both European heavy-weight insurance groups.
