Student Drivers Car Insurance Guide
Nearly 22% of students in the UK own a car and as an owner you should be well aware of your legal obligations. Principally, car insurance is a form of policy designed to protect you the student, your vehicle, and others. There are three types of insurance policy which offer different levels of cover at different costs. There are also numerous factors which will affect your student driver's premium.
Comprehensive
This type of car insurance for students, as is appropriately named, provides the policyholder
with an ‘all risks’ policy for you the student, and your car. A comprehensive
insurance policy will allow you to claim for any damage caused to your car, apart
from those exclusions agreed with your insurance company. Exclusions vary dependent
on the insurer but may include items like legal fees, breakdown cover,
windscreen damage, and medical fees.
If you have a students comprehensive car insurance policy you should be aware that you can claim for the damage caused by an accident to your car and also for minor damage that can happen. However, if you decide to make a claim for minor damage check the minimum excess payment required, and the effect the claim is likely to have on your insurance premium. Minor car damage is usually cheaper to pay for yourself.
Excess is the amount you agreed with the company when obtaining your student driver insurance quote and must be paid in the event of you deciding to make a claim. If you were not at fault you can claim it back from the other party’s car insurance company. A good way of reducing your student's premium is to have a high excess payable. Although you will have to pay a higher excess in the event of a claim.
Please note, always check with your Insurer regarding student driver policy conditions and levels of cover purchased.
Third Party, Fire and Theft
This type of car insurance for students is self explanatory and provides less cover.
The policy is designed to protect victims of accidents in which your
vehicle
is involved, your vehile catching fire, and the theft of your vehicle. A third party fire and theft insurance policy can also cover your legal fees in
case you require a solicitor to represent you.
Should your car sustain damage caused by a fire, your insurance policy does provide limited protection. In order to sustain such damage it is highly likely that your car will have been stolen and then set alight.
Please note, always check with your company regarding your student's car insurance policy conditions and levels of cover purchased.
Third Party Only
By law, as far as the Road Traffic Act(s) are concerned, you need to
have a minimum level of car insurance. Third party
will only cover your liability to others. There is no cover for damage
to yourself or your vehicle.
Third party car insurance for students offered by some companies may also cover you to drive other cars on a third party basis. Ascertain this information before getting a quote and you may save time. Also, always look carefully at the terms and conditions of your student driver's car insurance policy for this reason. The policy will tell you whether you can drive another vehicle, and whether someone else can drive your vehicle.
If you are found to be guilty of causing an accident, your company will pay any compensation to any injured victims of the accident. Any legal costs are covered and paid to the solicitors of the victims as well as the legal costs that your own company incurs representing you.
However, if you are involved in an accident in which you are the passenger, third party car insurance will only cover the student driver. You can claim compensation from the person driving your car should their negligent driving cause you injury. This is because the policy indemnifies the driver. What the third party policy doesn’t cover is the damage to your car whoever is driving it.
Please note, always check with the Insurer regarding your car insurance for students policy conditions and levels of cover purchased.
