Taxi Insurance Guide
If you operate a private hire vehicle for commercial purposes in the UK you will require a more tailored form of insurance able to provide more cover than a standard car policy. This is because you not only have a liability to yourself and other road users but you also have the responsibility of carrying passengers safely to their destination. Taxi insurance does not stop at ensuring the safety of your passengers and other road users but can also extend to cover your income due to any loss of business. The following taxi insurance policies are common, highly practical and in some cases legal requirements.
Employer’s liability insurance: If you run a family taxi firm but employ people from outside the family, you are required by law to purchase employer's liability insurance.
Taxi insurance: Driving a private hire vehicle means that by law you are required to have a minimum level of taxi insurance against third party liability. If you use your taxi full time it is far wiser to take out a fully comprehensive insurance policy.
Public liability: This will protect you from any liabilities from a third party (other than your employees) should an injury happen or some other form of damage occur during normal operation of your taxi business.
Material damage insurance: This will cover various assets (building, computer equipment, stock, or contents) from loss or damage caused by a number of causes (fire, flood, theft or other disasters).
Business interruption insurance: This will cover against the loss of turnover or trading profits should any damage to your property occur that prevents the normal operation of your taxi business.
Money insurance: In specific circumstances money insurance will reimburse you for money that is lost or stolen from the premises.
Over the last few years taxi insurance has become an increasingly expensive purchase. With the withdrawal of many schemes and the losses made by many UK insurance companies, and ever increasing compensation claims, the price of cover has increased with some taxi drivers being asked to pay an extra 50% or more. Some insurance brokers or companies offer the flexibility of 3, 6 or 12 month policies.
Taxi insurance should be available as a fully comprehensive policy, third party fire and theft, or third party only, and should not be limited to one private hire vehicle only. Dependent on the type of taxi firm you can get insurance for public hire, private hire, funeral furnisher's mourner's car, hearses, hospital and social service cars, school contracts, chauffeur driven limousines and wedding cars.
